Member services extranet

Business Requirement

An industry association needed to update its member extranet.  The site was outdated in look-and-feel, and the underlying content management system was no longer sustainable.  The existing site did not provide any interactive tools for members.  The new site needed to engage members to work online on industry issues. The extranet required tight integration with the member-management system, which was also being upgraded to use Microsoft Dynamics CRM, and with the corporate document management system.

Solution

Microworks planned, designed and deployed a new member extranet using Microsoft SharePoint 2010.  The site has a fresh look-and-feel that is consistent with corporate style guidelines and modern Web sensibilities. 

A complex security model was required to manage access to portal areas according to association membership level.  Access to extranet content is determined by permissions defined within the member-management application, built in Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

The extranet provides sites to support the work of numerous committees.  Each committee site displays committee members and committee reporting structure, which is auto-updated from the member-management application.

The portal is integrated with a corporate document management system. All content published to the extranet is automatically tagged with metadata.  Content is managed from within the back-end DM system, publishing new content and removing stale content from a single location.

Members can create a personal profile (using My Profile) and can self-define topical interests and skills by picking values from the Term Store.

The full-text search capability of SharePoint, combined with metadata tagging of profiles and other content, provides excellent search capabilities.
